MALCOLM DICKSON

I was born and brought up in Edinburgh. I was about six years old when I started to learn the violin. Every Sunday morning the family assembled to play quartets. Unfortunately I was the youngest of four children and they all plus my parents played stringed instruments so I rather lost out on that exercise. However I did get to play with the Waddell string orchestra of that city.

Then it was on to Rugby School in England where I played in their orchestra and ended up as it's leader. Cambridge followed with many memorable occasions playing with CUMS ( Cambridge University Musical Society ). Also chamber music.

Thereafter music playing was a bit sporadic for a good many years whilst I pursued a living as a civil engineer and until my daughter Barbara, a cellist, auditioned for the North York Symphony and insisted that I do likewise. Things have not stopped since that day. 20 Years with NYS, some opera and choral occasions and, after I retired to Collingwood, 20 years with The Huronia Symphony.
